Baby monitor review:
Zmodo mini WiFi IP camera

We were recently asked to review the Zmodo mini WIFI IP camera with night vision, as we have a 21 month old baby this was the ideal product for us to test out. The camera is very compact and has an adjustable design which you can place anywhere. It also has a 105° wide viewing angle and 720P colour sensor, a two-way audio, supported night vision and motion detection. The camera is viewed through an app called MeShare which allows you to view from any device.

Packaging

The Zmodo camera arrived encased in a simple brown box, very minimal and uncluttered. The camera was well protected in all the packaging and arrived safely in perfect condition.

Setting up

The hardware setup was very easy and straightforward, the camera is supplied with an attachment bracket with can be placed on a surface or on the wall. This bracket allows horizontal and incline adjustments. Once in position the camera’s power supply is a 5V DC adaptor which is supplied. (It’s the same connection as a Samsung phone). The power cord is a good length and once plugged in the camera will activate immediately. The camera is not supplied with a separate monitor, to view the camera you will need a smart phone, tablet or desktop computer and WiFi network the camera can connect to.

The camera is supplied with straight forward instructions but the general process is to connect both the camera and your smart phone to the same Wi-Fi network, download the App ‘MeShare’ from Google play or App Store. Then create an account and add the camera to your new account. This will allow you to see the camera on any platform you wish by simply logging in! You can also allow further cameras to your account.

Setup guide

Ease of use

Once the initial setup has been completed the camera and MeShare app is very easy to use. Decide which device you want to see the camera on e.g. tablet, login to MeShare and click on the camera and that’s it. The camera has intelligent motion detection which activates only on movement and can be setup to give you push notifications. MeShare also allows you to take pictures, record video and allow two-way sound.

Quality

The camera is very light weight and the plastic casing feels robust and the facing side is finished in high gloss black which gives it a smooth slick feel. We found the MeShare app stable and error free.

Durability

Although the camera is very light and flexible it feels as though it could with stand an attack from a toddler, which can happen if it’s within near reach of a cot!

Clarity

The camera has a low resolution and high resolution modes controlled from MeShare. The hi-res is clear and detailed. The night vision mode is activated automatically in low light and you will hear a click emanating from the camera when it activates. It also has a 105 degree viewing angle which really helps to see your child, the cot and surrounding area.

Overall
  • Very easy to setup – literally takes minutes
  • Keep an eye on your little one on any platform: smart phone, tablet or desktop
  • Multi-user’s: both parents can keep any eye on the camera by simply logging in on their own devices
  • View the camera while on location or away from the house
  • Smart alerts e.g. motion activated
  • Efficient night vision
  • Small, compact and unobtrusive
Negatives:

The consistent use of WiFi on your deceive especially smart phones will drain your batteries so you might find you need to charge them more often.
