Top tips on
dressing your bump

Top-tips-dressing-bumpDressing during pregnancy is no longer about oversized clothing; you really don’t need to loose your identity and style if you are expecting. We have put together our top tips based on all our pregnancy experiences on how to dress your bump and a few things to avoid!

Form fitting

Try not to go for obvious oversized billowy tops and fabrics, when dressing or buying for your bump try to go for more fitted fits that have room for your bump to grow.

Flattering patterns

Going for too much colour or oversized prints won’t do any favours to your bump and may make you look larger in other areas. Go for more muted colours, stripes such as Bretton stripes which are a classic style that will make you look and feel chic.

Balancing coordinates

When dressing up your bump in separates ensure you balance your top with you bottoms. For example if you wear a loose fitting top go with a more fitted pair of trousers and vice versa. This will result in a flattering silhouette, loose bottoms and a loose top may make you look bigger than you are so try and avoid that look if you can.

Fitted accessories

Belts and scarves can prove to be extremely useful and versatile, if you do have a baggy top, cardigan, shirt or dress cinch it above your bump with a belt this will give you a much more flattering look. Scarves are great for adding colour and pattern if you are wearing block colours so play around with both to add some extra versatility to your wardrobe.

Statement pieces

Stylish, chic and bold accessories like necklaces, earrings, bracelets and bags can add a burst of trend to any outfit. Accessories can add a refreshing look to a recycled outfit plus they are great investment pieces as you can still use them after pregnancy.

Adjustable and flexible

Do not underestimate the power of lycra, from stretchy tops to dresses these outfits will adjust with your growing bump. Also look out for tops and dresses that allow for easy nursing giving your outfits longevity even after pregnancy.

Wrap and empire

Wrap and empire lines are the most flattering fits for pregnancy and even after birth. This will mean that you can get a lot more wear after pregnancy. Empire gives you a good fit above your bump and skims over your belly, wrap dresses usually contain elastane which adjusts as your body changes.

Denim

A good pair of maternity jeans is worth splashing out on, a great fail safe for work or casual events you really can’t go wrong. Maternity jeans usually have stretchy panels to stretch under your bump or a stretchy band to go over your bump, whichever style you prefer they will see you through all three trimesters.

Tights and leggings

The great benefits of tights and leggings are that they go with everything from tunics to dresses and skirts and will constantly stretch to your changing shape.

Black is your best friend

A good black dress, top and jeans will see you through the days when you really need something flattering and simple to give you a quick confidence boost.

Hair, heels and make up

Do not underestimate the power of a good blow-dry, funky pair of heels and make up. They can take you from drab to fab in minutes.

Avoid crop tops

One to really avoid is a crop top or a top that is shorter at the front, either way it just doesn’t do your bump justice. If you want to show off you bump with pride then go with a fitted top or a body con dress.
